Using your technique, all the other road users will just think its odd behaviour - pulling out into an overtake position but then just sitting there for a moment. ![]() If they close the gap as you start your move, then you just brake and go behind again. Additionally, once out, you have a much faster and straight line overtake, so even if the car ahead is being silly, you can get past faster.That probably works ok with half a thousand horsepower under the bonnet but for the rest of us, we generally like to carry a bit of momentum through the overtake manoeuvre. so if the car ahead is going to react you can just pop back. and all without risk to you as you have not yet committed to the overtake. This gives you better visibility, shows the car in front that you are planning to overtake, gives them the opportunity to show you how they are going to react (e.g. move right initially without adding any forward speed. ![]() One way of managing it is by following the roadcraft approach to an overtake.
